I intended this entire month to be focused around all things Christmas. But what can I say? My life isn't all things Christmas. So here it goes:
Considering the purpose of children sports is to strengthen their physical bodies and build self esteem; I am continually astounded at how much we tear our kids down in sports. I just got a phone call from Isaac's basketball coach that they were cutting him. Cutting him? When he is 7 years old? You have got to be kidding me. He is the only child that is being cut from the team. This league is a third and fourth grade team. They only take second graders if they don't have enough children to make a team. So when they made their numbers, they decided Isaac would bring the team down and they should cut him. Isaac is not a good player. He's terrible. He really is. He is also very immature. So nothing the coach said was a surprise to me. I just thought the way it was handled was terrible! So I said my peace to the coach last night only to do it all over again with the league rep this morning. I stated my concerns with cutting children when even High School doesn't "cut" any kids. I also spoke from a business perspective pleading with not only some compassion, but also a sense of fairness that either all second graders be allowed to play, or none at all. Mind you that they don't cut any of the third or fourth graders no matter how terrible they are. They can't. It's not allowed. So I asked they not invite second graders to play at all or at the very least: make it perfectly clear to all the second grade parents that their child is trying out for the third and fourth grade team. All decisions will be made by (fill in date here) I expressed my dislike with that route simply for the fact that it would tear down some kids enough to turn them away from sports all together.
The results? Isaac will remain part of the team: as a manager. He's so immature that he had no idea that was in any way a negative thing and is just as excited as he was a week ago to be a part of this basketball team. As for me, you are now talking to the latest member of the CRBC board. That's right. They reeled me in. What can I say? If you are going to bitch, you have to be willing to be part of the solution. So add another thing to keep me busy to my ever growing list. At least I can insure that there is a voice of reason at these board meetings and not all the talk is about winning.

Ok, that is just inasane.....I can't believe they did that to him. And I will also say that sports is rough not only on the body, but the spirit too. I am not saying it is a bad thing because some or alot of children thrive in that aspect, but God help them if they don't thrive because there is no sensitivity from anyone....coaches or parents...ok I gave my 2 cents and thats all I can afford.
Good for you M!!! I agree with you 100%...I think that it is awful that they would invite 2nd graders only to cut them.
