practical romance

My friend Lynn brought this up in marriage class Wednesday night. It really got my head spinning. Steve isn't much of a true romantic. I don't know many men who are. But he does do some very romantic things for me that I tend to take for granted. I NEVER (and I mean never) fill up my own gas tank. He always takes the car and fills it up for me. Even now that he's traveling; he'll be sure to top it off Sunday night before he leaves in hopes that I won't have to go and get my own gas. At night after the day is over and we've eaten, done the dishes, and finished a good workout at the Y, my butt lays on the couch until bedtime. I'm done. I'm spent. I have no more energy left to give. Now Steve knows this and makes sure to bring me a glass of water so I don't have to get up. That's his way of saying, "I know how hard you've worked today. Thank you." When I do his laundry; he will always find something nice to say. "Honey, the whites sure are bright today." or "I like that detergent you're using" or even just "thanks for doing all my dirty clothes baby" Steve has a pet name for me. It's "hot britches" He'll be on the phone with his buddy and if I'm leaving and go to tell him goodbye- his response will be, "see you later hot britches." Not a big deal. But in front of his friend? That tells me he loves me and doesn't care who knows about it. So I'm trying to lament less about flowers and spontaneous dates and remember that he has a practical romance for me that will last a life time. Not such a bad thing huh?
