Parent Teacher Confrences

Well, this was easy. We went to the school to meet the teachers. Steven's teacher went on and on about what a great kid he was and how smart he was. Then she showed us some impressive papers Steven had written and told us how thrilled she was to have him in class. Then we started discussing the Extended Horizons program for him. This is the class for the academically advanced students. But the kicker is that they pull the kids out of class to do this special class every Tuesday. Then the kids are responsible for all the work they miss in their regular classes that entire day. I know the learning would be more advanced and Steven would be more engaged. I know he would enjoy the program. But I'm not sure about the extra homework. Steven was so overwhelmed just last week with his two end of the quarter projects due. What if this gets to be too much? And what if it makes him dislike learning? My goal for their education is to instill a love of learning in these kids that will last a lifetime. I don't want EH to steal that from him. On the other hand, is all the neat projects and hands on activities he would get to do that just aren't practical in a larger class with different academic levels. I guess Steve and I decided to allow for the testing and see where it goes from there. There is a chance he won't get into the program. It's not just about academics. It's artistic as well and also about personality. So we'll see what happens. But I was thrilled with his report from his teacher and all the great things she had to say about our son. It made my heart proud.

PS
I also asked his teacher to remember this for when Isaac goes to school. Hopefully they won't think I was such a terrible teacher having met Steven before!

You are a great teacher and it shows in what smart boys you have.
I think you are doing the right thing by letting them test him and go from there.

today will be a good test. Steven was sick and has to make up yesterday's schoolwork. Then he'll have a better idea of how much schoolwork that realy is.
